ULMA Polymer Concrete has an innovative design of facade ventilated, developed by the architect Lucio Alberto Martin from sketches by the artist Luis Feito.
in the Madrid suburb of San Sebastian de los Reyes has made the lining of the facade of the Municipal Centre.
"The idea of putting some blocks on the ventilated facade emerged teamwork developed by the architect Alberto Martin of Lucio and the sculptor and painter Luis Feito, founder of Grupo El Paso and a key figure in contemporary English art. "
SPC for the work:
Project: Municipal Centre.
Location: San Sebastian de los Reyes (Madrid)
Completion date: July 2006.
Architect: Alberto Martín de Lucio. Making
ventilated facade: Alberto Martín de Lucio, Luis Feito, ULMA Polymer Concrete.
Promoter: Municipality of San Sebastian de los Reyes.
Construction Company: Begar SA
Built area: 5,000 m2.
facade material: polymer concrete plates (west side library building), ceramic brick (other library building facades) and layer mortar (building facades classrooms)
The building:
global perception of the building for Municipal Training Center is constructed as a series of volumes, with contrasts and balances.
The black cube almost perfect, the tallest, is contrasted by the lower white prism, separated by recessed access acting as a joint that articulates the union. In turn, a wall covering is the unifying element.
applications are also differentiated. The cube, whose image is symbolic, for it is chosen for action by Luis Feito groups the hall, exhibition halls, library and outdoor auditorium. In the prism of a more pragmatic, classrooms and workshops are distributed.
The environment of the building complements its formal and functional understanding, limiting access to plantations of trees and tours with bands marking grass, shrubland and topsoil.
The facade and cubes:
The idea:
Luis Feito was enthusiastic about the idea of a large-scale performance on the facade of the Training Centre. Collaboration with the architect of the project was intense, with exchanges of ideas in the artist's studio until the final definition of the proposal. From the first moment
Feito dismissed the idea of using ventilated facade as a basis for a new painting. Rather, their interest was focused on the contrast between the two architectural volumes and proposed building exercise sculpture, in which certain parts of the enclosure is separated from it by creating a three dimensional effect, with different textures of the base on which to fly.
Implementation:
The material selected for the main facade of the library building has been the polymer concrete parts black with variable formats between 180x90 and 30x90 cm. Its uniqueness is based on three-dimensional effect achieved by building on the closing of cubic volumes flown to the design of Luis Feito. Has selected a satin finish for the main plane of the facade, with details minionda plate under the skylight, and glossy for cubes. This combination of textures helps to highlight the interplay of volume, with its lights and shadows.
The biggest technical challenge was the completion of five faces of the cubes, flying 11 or 20 cm above the surface of the enclosure. Each of the elements had to be manufactured individually, placing it in position on a supporting structure supported by the main structure of the ventilated facade with hidden fastening solutions tailored to each case. Each cube would fit perfectly into the front and stay plumb with the rest of the volumes coplanar.
The polymer concrete was an unknown material to address optional, but the continued support of the technical-commercial ULMA Polymer Concrete in the search for solutions and the flexibility and reliability of its proposals have managed to keep him in mind for future projects. The material properties , beauty of tone and competitive price, have tipped the balance in favor of ULMA, although others had shuffled previously cut materials such as steel and natural stone.
